Real estate developer stabbed to death near Hind Cinema

In a bizarre incident, a real estate developer Buddhadeb Sahani was stabbed to death on a busy road near Hind Cinema Hall at Bowbazar on Friday afternoon, police said.

Local traders caught the accused, identified as Rameswar Singh, and later handed him over to police.

Police came to know from local people that the accused met the victim outside Calcutta Girls School on Biplabi Anukul Chandra Street to have a discussion as the latter had taken some money from him. Despite repeated requests, he had not returned the money.

A heated altercation took place between the duo when the accused forced the victim to return the money.

The situation turned worse when the victim pushed Singh and tried to leave the place. The accused pounced on Sahani and started beating him. He was also carrying a dagger and repeatedly stabbed the victim.

People present in the area were shocked to see a person openly stabbing someone. Moreover, students of the Calcutta Girls School were also coming out of the school campus when the incident took place. Singh attempted to flee while Sahani’s body was lying in a pool of blood. The traders caught Singh and informed the matter to police.

Policemen from Bowbazar police station rushed to the spot and sent Sahani to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The traders handed over the accused to the police.

Sahani had received injuries on his head and stomach. He died due to profuse bleeding. Police came to know after speaking to the victim’s family members that Sahani had left home at around 11 am and he had received a call just a few minutes before he left.

“He told the caller that he would meet him somewhere at Chandni Chowk. It seems that he had spoken to Singh before leaving his house,” said a police officer, adding that it was a pre-planned murder as the accused had carried the dagger with him and he was quite clear in his intention to kill Sahani if he fails to repay the money.

Police said they would speak to some businessmen, who were known to both the victim and the accused to get more details about the transaction.

Sources said senior police officers on Friday held a meeting at Lalbazar to discuss about the security arrangement of the citizens.
