A Class IX student from Alipurduar who was raped and later set on fire by her ex-boyfriend succumbed to her injuries on Friday after battling for her life for the last 10 days.
The incident had triggered tension at the Kathalbari area of Falakata in Alipurduar after the news of her death reached the village.
The victim was abducted by her ex-boyfriend, Deepak Sarkar who had allegedly raped the victim before setting her on fire.
Her half-charred body was recovered by the local people from an abandoned place on October 19.
The victim was immediately rushed to Birpara state general hospital.
She was later shifted to North Bengal College and Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
After putting up a brave fight for past ten days the victim died in the hospital on Friday morning.
After starting an investigation, police have arrested Sarkar. During the investigation, the accused had admitted his guilt.
It was learnt that the girl was in a loving relationship with the accused youth, but the relationship later broke off following some problems.
This did not go down well with the accused, who hatched a plan to take revenge on her.
He insisted her to patch up the relationship but failed as the girl refused to continue the relationship.
After getting an opportunity, the accused abducted the victim and took her to an abandoned place where he inflicted her physical torture.
Later, he set her on fire and fled the spot. The girl received severe burn injuries in the incident.
Nearly, 80 per cent of her body was burnt in the fire. As the incident occurred late at night, there was no one to rescue the girl.
The victim’s family members have demanded stern action against the accused who brutally killed the girl only to take a revenge.
The local MLA from the area has announced financial support to the victim’s family members.
The accused’s family members who stay in a nearby area have fled from their house since the incident had taken place.
