Rape spree continues unabated in UP

The rape spree in Uttar Pradesh continues unabated, where an infant was raped by a 45-year-old man in Bulandshehar district, evoking furor among the public as well as the opposition parties.

The horrifying sexual assault incident took place in Pahasu area of Bulandshehar district late Thursday night, when a 13-month-old child was raped by a middle-aged man.

Superintendent of Police (Dehat) Vijay Gautam said here on Friday that the accused Gyan Singh, a native of Aligarh, has been arrested and sent to jail. The victim, had come on a marriage function from Chiji village in Gautam Buddha Nagar district. Allegedly, when the minor was found alone, the man raped her. The victim has been admitted to Meerut Medical College, where she was stated critical. Gyan Singh, who had also come to attend the marriage, has admitted the crime before the mediapersons.

In the past one month, seven incidents of sexual assault have come to light in the state. In a similar incident, a girl was raped and set afire in Etawah -- the native place of UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. The victim is battling for life in a hospital with 85 per cent burns. Police have registered a case against seven persons, including four women. The family members of the victim said the boy whom she loved, raped her and later set her ablaze with the assistance of his family members, senior superintendent of police (SSP) N Chaudhary said.

A couple of days ago, a poor four-year-old girl was raped and murdered in the posh Gomti Nagar area of  Lucknow. In another shocking incident in Pratapgarh, a dalit gangrape victim was attacked and her tongue was chopped off on 10 July.  The incident took place at Naubasta village under Jethwara police station, where the 18-year-old-girl rape victim was admitted to hospital after three youths chopped off her tongue to disallow her to give any statement. In Moradabad, a medical student was raped and killed few days ago, while in Bulandshehar a woman was gang raped in the name of employment.
