‘Raja Bhaiya threatening us’

The family of a village headman killed last month in Kunda in Uttar Pradesh alleges they are being threatened by the state’s former minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh, also known as Raja Bhaiya.

Raja Bhaiya is the legislator of Kunda. Two of his alleged aides have been arrested for the murder of Kunda deputy superintendent of police Zia-ul-Haq, who died in clashes that followed the village headman’s killing. The Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the two murders.

The village headman’s brother, Pawan Yadav, who made the allegations against Raja Bhaiya, also claims their father was beaten up in 2003 on being given the contract to construct a bird sanctuary in Beti lake. The lake is close to Raja Bhaiya’s palatial home in Kunda.

Raja Bhaiya had to resign from the Akhilesh Yadav cabinet following the outrage over Zia-ul-Haq’s murder. The police officer’s wife, Parveen Azad, holds the politician responsible for her husband’s death. Zia-ul-Haq was killed after he reached Pratapgarh in Kunda, where the village headman had been shot. A mob reportedly cornered him and the policemen who were with him allegedly abandoned him. Zia-ul-Haq was shot during the clashes.
