Rain respite for city, blustery conditions to prevail for next few days: Met Dept

The temperature in the city during the day time dropped by 2-3 degrees after it received 39 mm rainfall till Wednesday evening. Hailstorm was reported in some parts of the state during the afternoon.

According to the Regional Meteorological Department, the city had been missing the winter rain for quite sometimes. The city on Wednesday broke the record of rainfall received in 24 hours that till now stood at 24.7.

Alipore MET office has predicted possibility of a few more rain showers in next few days. According to a senior official of the MET office, districts like North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Midnapore will receive considerable amount of rainfall. The lowest temperature in the city on Wednesday touched 25.1 degree Celsius while the highest temperature remained at 31 degree Celsius. MET office predicted that there is likely to be no drop in the temperature in the next few days.

In the morning the city and its adjoining districts woke up to an overcast sky. The weather was humid and sultry. Soon it started raining from 9.30 am. Moderate to heavy rainfall was experienced in North and Northern suburb. Seeing the weather KMC engineers reached the pumping stations and gave trial runs to the pumps to ensure that in case of heavy rainfall water recedes fast. 

The rain brought relief to the citizens who were experiencing summer like conditions in the end week of February. People were seen going to their work places wearing rain coats. 

The traffic movement in some parts of the city was slow due to rain. Many people reached their work places late due to traffic congestion.
