Railways’ H1 freight revenue rises 25%

The Railways has posted over 25 per cent growth during the first six months of the ongoing fiscal from freight traffic.

It generated Rs 39,888.95 crore from freight traffic during April-September 2012 compared to Rs 31,802.31 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 25.43 per cent, said a Railways statement issued on Friday.

The revenue was earned from carrying 481.45 million tonnes [mt] of commodity-wise freight traffic during this period as compared to 459.24 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, the statement said.

In September alone, the PSU behemoth earned Rs 6,040.96 crore, out of which Rs 2,509.01 crore came from transportation of 36.10 million tonnes of coal, the statement said.

It earned Rs 518.07 crore from transportation of 8.20 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and other domestic user, Rs 575.41 crore from 8.01 million tonnes of cement and Rs 488.20 crore from 3.57 million tonnes of foodgrains, the statement added.
