‘Railways committed to promote sports’

Railways is committed to the promotion of sports and games in the country, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said here on Tuesday at the inauguration of the national wrestling championship.

Asserting that railways has been in the forefront in promoting sports and games for women in the country, Prabhu said that wrestling is connected with ancient traditions and the country has achieved good results in the sport at international level as well.

The 60th Senior Men Freestyle, Greco Roman style and 18th Female Senior National Wrestling Championships is being held under the aegis of Wrestling Federation of India here.

“Railways is also part of the Indian society. It is the responsibility of the Railways that we must promore sports so that they will carry the flag of India all over the world. So it is not only to run the trains but also realise true potential of its employees,” Prabhu said when asked why railways is involved in wrestling.

Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha said that wrestling has been a game of ancient tradition in the country and has moved from rural areas to the urban areas.

Wrestling is a popular sport wherein most wrestlers belong to the northern part of the country especially Haryana.

The championship is being organized in Delhi after 20 years.
