‘Rahul Gandhi speaks what he is told’

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has been hit by one scam after another during its second tenure. What do you have to say about the alleged kickbacks in the VVIP chopper deal?

Since this matter is reviewed by the ministry of defence,  therefore it is very sensitive. There is no need to proclaim someone innocent or guilty so soon. As far as  former Indian Air Force chief S P Tyagi is concerned, we shouldn’t rush to conclusions and denigrate the former air force chief.

There have been reports that the government is stalling the CBI’s inquiry in the coalgate scam and files have not been provided to CBI officials for investigation?

Government’s intentions have been wrong from the very beginning in this matter, prime facie there are irregularities. People who are related with Congress party are involved.

The recent stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Allahabad has invited criticism over the preparedness by the state administration, what do you have to say about it?

The death of two devotees at the Kumbh mela was unfortunate. But among three crore people who converged for a holy dip in the river this year, not a single person reported any problem. The arrangements were praised by everyone and no inconvenience was caused.

It is sad that the stampede took place because of a confusion that took place at Allahabad railway station in Uttar Pradesh but the state government can’t be held responsible for this. It is very damaging that every matter gets politicised these days.

You have been the only party in Uttar Pradesh to finalise the candidates for the general elections, but like previous times you have changed many of your candidates? Also, what do you have to say about your party’s prediction of early parliamentary polls?

There is a benefit in declaring candidates in advance. By doing so, we can gauge the response and make changes, if required. For instance, if we come to know that a particular candidate is not getting the right response in his constituency, we have time to change the candidate and put our best candidate forward instead.

As far as early elections are concerned, no government has committed as many sins as the UPA government has, price rise continues unabated and there is no commodity left whose prices aren’t increased.

The popularity of government is decreasing by the day and the Congress very well knows if they hold the elections later, they won’t be able to stem the tide. They will definitely take advantage of a good budget and hold elections four months in advance.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi during his recent visit to Uttar Pradesh had severely criticised the state government?

Rahul Gandhi speaks what he is told. Even while addressing a gathering in Uttar Pradesh, he said ‘something’ while following his trademark style of rolling up his sleeves!

What are your comments on the death penalty given to Afzal Guru, the accused in the Parliament attack case?

As a student of political science, I believe that there should be no death penalty, but this is my personal view. Often during such trials, mistakes are committed or new facts emerge later, but the sad part is that death penalties can never be undone.

Galileo asserted that the earth revolves around the sun but at that time people thought it was blasphemy and executed him. Later, mankind realised that Galileo was right and that he was executed for saying what is right. Even Socrates  was made to consume poison by his people for his beliefs. Even while crucifying Jesus Christ, the Roman Emperor had the option of forgiving either Jesus or a criminal, but he chose to commute the criminal and execute Christ. Today, millions of people worship him across the world.

Another problem with death sentence is that however serious the crime is the guilty suffers only for a few minutes. These people, should be given life imprisonment so that they suffer for years and are made to repent on their actions.

Do you agree with government’s anti-rape law ordinance?

Let the ordinance be examined by the standing committee, only then will we take a stand.
