Rage against US reaches Kolkata

Thousands of angry protestors marched in the city to raise their voice against an anti-Islam film produced in the United States. Chanting slogans like ‘Down with America’ as they marched to the American Centre library in the city’s office district, agitators threw stones at the police who blocked them from approaching the nearby US Consulate.

The protesters. it was learnt, belong to the All Bengal Minority Council and All Bengal Minority Youth Federation. The film Innocence of Islam, which apparently shows disrespect to Prophet Muhammad, has triggered protests throughout the world. Thespian Bibhas Chakraborty rued violent nature of the protests and said that there should be a legitimate forum for addressing such issues. ‘I do not know whether there is any legitimate cause for protest. But why should a group of people take recourse to violence and disruption of civic life?’ he told Millennium Post. Said noted author Sunil Gangopadhyay, ‘It is sad that people often react violently without knowing what the content is. IPS officer Nazul Islam’s book also ran into a lot of trouble recently because of similar lessons’

Minority groups in India have called for a ban on the film, with one such group even filing a PIL in the Bombay High Court.
