Quake in Ggn: Call centre workers feel the jolt

An earthquake of a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale that hit the Millennium City in the early morning of Thursday caused fear and anxiety among call centre professionals working in the cyber city of Gurugram.

The tremors in the Cyber City were felt in the wee hours of Thursday at 4.30 am. Most of the call centre offices operate during the night shift in order to cater to their international clients. Some of the prominent call centres operating from the city are Genpact, EXL, Convergys, WNS. American Express also has its call centre and customer care facilities functional in the city. Most of these call centres operate from the famous commercial complexes in the city like Unitech Cyber green park, Bestech City mall and Global Business Park.

The offices of the call centres are located at the higher floors which makes them vulnerable during major calamities.

There were no damages that were reported because of the quake. The tremors, however, caused fear, anxiety and excitement among the professionals.

Rahul Bharadwaj who works at Genpact said: “I did feel the quake while I was working. As it was not a major quake, I will call the experience to be more exciting rather than fearful.”

An official responsible for administrative matters at Unitech Cyber Green Park said: “Gurugram like Delhi is susceptible to earthquakes and it is not the first time that a tremor was felt in the city. Most of the builders, however, have invested a great deal towards safety techniques while constructing residential and commercial complexes. These complexes are able to withstand such tremors.”
