Punjab polls: AAP to start 'Parivar Jodo' campaign

In a bid to woo voters in the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled next year, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is all set to launch 'Parivar Jodo' campaign in the state from February 6.

The party is likely to attract around 13 lakh families in its first phase of campaigning. Riding high on its historic win in the Delhi Assembly elections, the AAP is now eyeing at Punjab.

“There are around 60-65 lakh families in Punjab and we will try to convince people to support AAP. The first phase of campaigning will start from February 6 and will go on for 15 days. We do have a good party structure now. We did pretty well in Punjab, where we won four seats in the 2014 parliamentary elections. We expect better results in the upcoming Assembly elections,” said a senior party leader, requesting anonymity.”

“We have emerged as an important party in two states (Delhi and Punjab). Punjab brought good news for AAP as we secured over 24 per cent votes in the parliamentary elections in 2014. The party will change the equations here and Punjab politics will now be tri-polar,” he added.

The party had bagged 2 per cent less votes than the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which polled over 26 per cent votes in the Lok Sabha elections. Despite the high vote share of 33 per cent, the Congress had managed to win only three seats, while AAP and SAD had won four seats each and the BJP bagged two seats with a vote share of 8.7 per cent.
