Punjab-Israel to tie up for dairy farming

Punjab will soon tie-up with an Israeli company to develop the dairy farming sector in the state and provide farmers an opportunity to diversify from the traditional wheat-paddy farming cycle, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said here Tuesday.

Badal made the announcement after a meeting with senior officials of Israeli dairy farming sector company 'Afimilk' here.

Badal said the time has come when farmers of Punjab must look for some viable diversification and alternative to traditional agriculture as wheat and paddy production has not only reached its saturation point in the state but was also facing marketing threat as other states in the country had increased their own food grain production.

'Those states, which were earlier known as food grain consuming states, have now tremendously enhanced their food grain productivity. At such at this juncture dairy farming could prove to be a blessing for the farmers with small land holdings in the state,' Badal said.

A state government spokesman said that 'Afimilk' provides professional guidelines and technical support to dairy farming sector world over.

Through the use of advanced technology made available by the company, the annual yield of milk from a cow could go up to 12,000 litres, the spokesman said.
