Punjab govt on austerity drive

As part of austerity measures, the cash-starved Punjab government today directed boards, corporations and cooperative organisations not to publish their own calendars and diaries.

All the departments had been directed to use diaries and calendars published by the state government and not to publish their own diaries and calendars, an official spokesman said here.

'This decision has been taken as part of austerity measures,' he said.

The state faces an outstanding debt of nearly Rs 77,000 crore and a fiscal deficit of around Rs 8,800 crore.

The spokesman said each board, corporation or cooperative organisation would now have to submit its demand for required diaries and calendars by 10 November every year to the Controller, Printing and Stationery, Punjab.

For the current year, they can submit their demands to the concerned office within 10 days, he said.

Diaries and calendars for this year were not published as the model code of conduct was in force in the state in the wake of the recent assembly election.

The spokesman said the concerned Board or Corporation would have to deposit the cost of calendars and diaries with the Controller, Printing and Stationery, Punjab.
