Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal greeted the country on the occasion of Republic Day.
‘Today is day of rejoicing for all of us as it was on this historic day in 1950 that India became a sovereign, socialist, democratic and secular republic and millions of us got the power to exercise our franchise, fulfilling our cherished aspirations of a government of the people, for the people and by the people,’ Badal said. ‘Punjabis led the entire nation in making sacrifices at the altar of the Indian National freedom struggle.’
The governor Shivraj Patil also extended his greetings to the nation on the occasion, saying, ‘I have the privilege to extend my heartiest greetings to all Indians living in the country and abroad and brave personnel of our armed forces, who guard our frontiers on land, at sea and in the air to defend the unity and territorial integrity of the nation.’ Bikram Singh Majithia, revenue, public relations and non conventional energy minister, too extended his wishes. ‘I also pay floral tributes to our great martyrs and freedom fighters,’ he said.
