Pune techie case: Arrested accused hired contract killer

The Pune police arrested Santosh Kumar, a 25-year-old IT engineer, the prime accused in Antara Das murder case.

“During investigation, it was revealed that Santosh Kumar had very smartly planned the murder. The accused claimed that he was present in Bengaluru on the day of the incident,” Additional Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Shinde said.

Kumar was produced before the court on Thursday and was remanded to seven days police custody. Das who was working in an IT firm at Talawade in the outskirts of Pune was murdered on December 23 night, near her office. Das was a resident of Sarsuna in Behala.

Her parents told the investigating officers that for the past one week, she used to tell her younger sister that someone was threatening her over the telephone. She was under tremendous tension for the past one month.

The police officers said Kumar used to work with Das in the same company before he moved to Bengaluru. He had proposed several times to Antara which she declined.

Finally, Kumar approached her through one of their common friend Ashu Kumar. Unable to get positive response from her, he engaged a contract killer and eliminated her to take revenge.

An eyewitness told the police that on that fateful night, she was intercepted by a youth on her way back home. They picked up a quarrel and he brandished a knife and stabbed her.

She managed to run for a few yards but the assailant came from behind and caught her and stabbed her repeatedly. She fell on the ground bleeding profusely. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.

The police got Santosh’s name from Antara’s colleagues. When police met him in Bengaluru, in a bid to prove his innocence, he showed the investigating officers CCTV footage to prove that on the day of the crime he was in Bengaluru. This aroused the suspicion of the officers who picked him up for interrogation. On the face of investigation, he broke down and confessed his crime. Search is on for the contract killer.

“There are messages between them which showed that Kumar was forcing her to have a relationship with him. However, she was non-responsive and even reprimanded him for harassing her. We are looking out for the other person in this connection and the manhunt has been intensified,” he said.
