Priyanka Vadra rejects Modi’s fatherly love

Modi had reportedly said during the course of the interview that he did not consider Priyanka a political rival like her mother Sonia Gandhi or her brother Rahul Gandhi, adding that in Indian culture daughters were spared from attacks. But this part was not shown on TV. ‘It was a call taken that the portion may create a political controversy,’ an unnamed source was quoted as saying in the report. Reacting to the issue, information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari said, ‘The best person who can reply will be Prasar Bharti itself.’

Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, meanwhile, said on Thursday that editing content ‘is the prerogative’ of the channel. Priyanka’s reaction came shortly after Chidambaram expressed doubts whether the Congress president’s daughter would be happy to consider Modi as a father figure. ‘I am happy that Modi considers Priyanka Gandhi as his daughter, but am not sure if she will be happy to consider Modi as a father figure,’ Chidambaram said.

The BJP on its part has alleged heavy censorship, an allegation also circulated on social media, based on the fact that the interview was aired two days after it was recorded. Doordarshan officials did not specifically answer whether the ‘daughter’ remarks had been removed, but said, ‘There was no deliberate omission or editing. In fact, all points made by  Modi were highlighted in the 35-minute version that was telecast.’
