Prime accused in Guwahati case arrested

The prime accused in the Guwahati molestation case Amar Jyoti Kalita was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police from Lanka police station area on Monday. The police sources said that he was staying there in a guest house for the past couple of days.

The local police interrogated the accused. He can be to Guwahati on transit remand after the arrival of the Assam Police in the city. Earlier, Kalita was traced by a CCTV camera at the Howrah station after which an alert was issued for his lookout throughout the country.

The Assam Police had earlier claimed that Kalita had fled to Odisha in the aftermath of the incident, from where he fled to Mumbai.

Kalita is said to be a friend of the TV reporter who shot the molestation video on 9 July. The journalist of NewsLive TV Gaurav Jyoti Neog was arrested last week.

A teenager was molested on 9 July in Guwahati, and the incident was filmed by the NewsLive journalist Neog. The media took up the incident on 12 July, following which there was outrage in the country with activists demanding justice for the victim and action against the guilty.
