Prez inaugurates 3 buildings of Vidyanagar College

President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday inaugurated three buildings and two gymnasiums at Vidyanagar College where he had started his teaching career over five decades ago.

Mukherjee was one of the early teachers to be appointed.

The president of the college Kartick Chandra Adhikari who happens to be one of his colleagues was present at the function.

Mukherjee was accompanied by Governor KN Tripathi, vice-chancellor of Calcutta University Sugato Marjit, state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, deputy Speaker Sonali Guha and  local MP Abhishek Banerjee. Mukherjee also unveiled the bust of Dhirendranath Bera, founder of the college.

The UGS has given Rs 10.23 crore to set up the buildings. Recollecting his days in the college, the President said the college started with 67 students.

“I used to come by bus number 75 and it was a real pleasure to teach the students. Five decades ago, we could not think to invite the Governor or the vice- chancellor of Calcutta University to attend a function organised by the college,” he said.

Mukherjee said over the years, lots of development has taken place in the college.

He inaugurated a three-storey administrative block along with an auditorium and gymnasiums for the students.
