Possible to measure reduction in coal fuel: DMRC

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has said that it is possible to quantify reduction in coal and fossil fuels while providing world-class mass transit services.

The Corporation, in a presentation at World Climate Change Conference 2015, Paris, submitted that the Delhi Metro helps to remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it contributes, making it a completely carbon neutral system.

Delhi Metro’s public information officer Anuj Dayal said that the DMRC is the only public transit service getting carbon credits for its regenerative braking and ‘modal shift projects’.

According to the Corporation, it is possible to quantify reduction in coal and fossil fuels while providing world-class mass transit services.

Dayal added that carbon finance could be generated by the revenue earned from the sale of carbon credits from its two GHG mitigation projects which are the very first of their kind in the world for the transport sector.

“The DMRC has been able to effectively demonstrate the enormous socio-economic co-benefits of a Mass Rapid Transit System. The Corporation also plans to tap 50 MW of solar power in next three years,” the official said.

“The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has a well-laid out Sustainability Plan for the future and the next step is to capture the positive health impacts from DMRC’s operations, given the state of pollution in Delhi,” he said.
