Poll violence in Assam kills 11

Eleven people were killed in police firing and seven CRPF personnel and policemen injured in violence in Goalpara district during the third and final phase of the panchayat elections in Assam on Tuesday.

Four people were killed in Kahiribari, two each in Kasadhal, Chilukut and Rakshishini and one in Bekipul after the police opened fire, police sources said.

Eight people, including a woman, were killed in police firing and several others injured in Assam’s trouble-torn Goalpara district.

The firing took place when those in Rabha Hasong Autonomous District Council areas opposed to the holding of the panchayat elections ahead of the Autonomous Council polls, attacked polling centres in different parts of the district, the sources said

Principal Secretary Home G D Tripathy said that as polling began in the morning large groups of people attacked various voting centres in the district forcing the police to resort to firing to quell the mob.

A mob of 400 men and women armed with iron rods, axes, matchets and sticks attacked a polling station at Kathalmari school at Kahibari under Dhupdhora police station, police said.

Police said when it fired in retaliation two men and a woman were killed on the spot there.

In similar incidents three persons were killed at Palsar, and one each at Kachuela and Silopathar, the police said. Krishnai police station officer-in-charge Hatem Ali and two police personnel were injured at Bekibul by the protestors who also attacked polling personnel during the day. Army was deployed in Krishnai area where indefinite curfew is on along the National Highway, Tripathy said.

Several others were also injured in poll-related clashes in the districts where five vehicles, including two each of police and polling personnel and a media house, were set ablaze.
