The director general of The Election Commission of India, Akshay Rout, said on Wednesday that because of low voter turn-out during past elections a need has been felt to draw up innovative and inclusive strategies to inform, motivate and facilitate active participation of people in the election process.
‘To achieve this goal, the Election Commission of India has embarked upon a nation-wide programme called the ‘Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation’ (SVEEP) which is basically an election management operation aimed at increasing the enrolment of eligible citizens in electoral list and motivating every registered voter to vote by invoking various communication interventions and targeted programmes,’ said Rout. Rout along with Delhi’s chief electoral officer Vijay Dev, held a meeting on Wednesday on efforts being made for the same.
