Policeman killed, 38 injured in separate road accidents

A police constable was killed and as many as 38 persons including 18 policemen were injured in three separate road accidents in the state.

Subid Ali, a police constable who was on duty near Duckbanglow More at Barasat in North 24 Parganas, died after being knocked down by a speeding truck.

A resident of Howrah, Ali was on a patrol duty on the Jessore Road a little after midnight on Monday when he was hit by the truck.

His colleagues rushed him to the Barasat district hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Police said that the truck was coming at top speed and hit the victim. The driver fled along with the truck immediately after the accident.

Police are conducting raids to nab the driver. A probe has been initiated.

In another incident, 18 police personnel including women were injured when a police van they were travelling in overturned near Durgapur area under Krisngung police station.

All the injured persons were taken to Shaktinagar District Hospital. Some of the injured are stated to be in serious condition.

The police van was returning from a function when the accident took place. The vehicle was at a high speed when the vehicle overturned. 

Around 20 persons were injured when the bus they were travelling in collided head on with a truck near Banganagar area of Falta in South 24 Parganas on Sunday night. 

Police said that the accident might have taken place due to fog.

Both the drivers could not see the other vehicle coming from the opposite direction. Five of the injured police personnel are stated to be in serious condition. The incident had led to a huge traffic jam in the area.
