Police peeve: Actress alleges harassment by cop

Theatre artiste and Bollywood actress Shilpi Marwaha alleged of police high-handedness on Monday, after being allegedly harassed by an official when the autorickshaw she was travelling in was hit by a Honda City.

Twenty-four-year-old Marwaha shot to fame after being seen as Abhay Deol’s screen sister in the recently released Raanjhanaa. At approximately 3 pm on Monday, an autorickshaw that Marwaha had been travelling in stopped at the traffic signal in north-west Delhi’s Azadpur area. A speeding Honda City hit the auto from behind. ‘Instead of apoligising, the driver of the Honda City started beating up the auto driver, which is why I was forced to intervene,’ recalls Marwaha.

'A PCR van soon reached the spot, but after a short conversation with the Honda City driver, sub-inspector, Sandeep Kumar, allowed him to leave. When I protested, Kumar threatened to have me  arrested for creating a ruckus,' said Marwaha. Marwaha, who works with leading theatre artiste and activist Arvind Gaur in the capital claims the sub-inspector abused her. And the ordeal, she says, was far from over. The actor has alleged that Kumar then called a lady constable and had her taken to the Adarsh Nagar police station.

Meanwhile, Gaur also reached the police station, after receiving a call from Marwaha. 'Surprisingly, the police seized the driving license of the auto rickshaw driver and forced him to write a complaint against Marwaha,' alleged Gaur, adding, that Marwaha had also sustained minor injuries in the incident. The actress was finally allowed to leave the police station late that evening, after the intervention of senior police officials.

DCP north-west P Karunakaran confirmed the incident and said an investigation has been ordered into the matter. 'The case has been reported to the vigilance office, and the sub-inspector’s conduct is being probed,’ he said.
