Police are searching for a man, who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl at Majherbari, Alipurduar. The girl, who had come to see the Chhath Puja at her maternal uncle’s place, was missing for some days, but she was later recovered from the roadside.

The police are appealing for witnesses after the victim was found at a place near to Majherbari last Wednesday knocking on doors of a house of his friend.

Police said the girl was extremely traumatised by the ordeal and was unable to provide a description of her attackers, other than they were white men whom she did not know.

The victim raised an alarm after she was taken by the men in the Majherbari area and was driven away in a silver car.

The police said the girl was being supported by specialist officers. “It is taking quite a long time to retrieve the information from her,” a police officer said.

The victim had left her house and was walking along the road, near her uncle’s place. Shortly after that, she was abducted and then she sustained a serious sexual assault. Police believe this happened inside the vehicle.

The description of the suspects is very limited. All police have been able to know, is that one of the accused was a local man who came recently in the area and started his garment business. People who were in that road between those times may have seen one of the accused waiting for the girl.

“He targeted the girl quite early and was looking for opportunity,” the police officer added.

It will be recalled that an inmate of the home for mentally ill women in Gurap who had escaped from a Hooghly hospital during a medical check-up was found in Alipurduar couple of year ago. Police believed that some district based traffickers had kidnapped her to deport her to Nepal.

However, police initiated a probe to nab the kidnapper here in Majherbari incident.
