Police files case in ‘morphed’ photos of Bengali television actress

Popular TV serial actress Madhumita Chakraborty, who is well known as ‘Pakhi’, on Friday lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime cell police station at Lalbazar alleging that “baseless news” claiming that she was involved in a sleaze racket in Goa was published in news portals of Bangladesh.

On Friday she went to the city police’s headquarter at Lalbazar along with her husband Sourav Chakraborty. They lodged a complaint after a talk with the joint commissioner of police (crime) Vishal Garg.

It may be mentioned that a news article was published in a news portal of Bangladesh on August 14 claiming that she had been arrested in Goa for her running a sleaze racket.

A morphed photograph of the actress was also carried. The same news was carried in two other news portals of the neighbouring country. She told the police that the news were completely false and sought legal action against the people who had tarnished her image.

“It is not only a matter of embarrassment, but it is mental torture as hundreds of people had been calling us and asking what went wrong,” she said. Later, the morphed photographs of the actress were also being circulated in various social media. Soon after realising that the situation was going out of control and her image was getting tarnished, she approached the police.

She told the police that she had recently acted for a television show of Bangladesh. Police are trying to ascertain whether the incident took place out of sheer rivalry as she had got an opportunity to work for a TV programme in Bangladesh.

The police, however, are trying to ascertain the internet protocol addresses of the computers through which the morphed photographs were uploaded in social media.

According to the legal experts, the police need to take necessary steps if they find in their investigation that the accused were from the neighbouring country. The actress and her husband said that senior police officers of the Kolkata Police have assured that they would take all necessary steps to help them get justice and they have deposited all necessary documents.
