Police busts drug smuggling racket, six held in Burdwan

Police busted a drug smuggling racket by arrested six key members including a woman of a group from Mangalkote in Burdwan on Wednesday morning.

Acting on a tip off, a team comprising officers from local police station was waiting in plain clothes at an intersection that they had to pass to reach their destination.

After waiting around two hours, they found six persons passing the area on two motorbikes and the police chased them. They tried to flee, but failed as they couldn’t cross the congested market area. They finally got arrested.

Police said the accused Lipika Mondal, Keshab Sarkar and Borhan Sheikh are the residents of Nanur in Birbhum. The three others – Buddhadeb Garai, Sanjay Ghosh and Raja Sheikh – are residents of Ketugram.

Police recovered 2.60 kg narcotics substances, two pipe-guns and Rs 2.71 lakh cash. Their motorbikes were also seized.

They had been involved in the racket of smuggling narcotic substances for the past few years and police suspect that they have link with members of other rackets in the states adjacent to Bengal.

A senior police officer said that their arrest came as a major breakthrough because they could provide information to the police that would help them to arrest other members of their group.

The police are also trying to find whether they have connection with any such racket in north Bengal. The police have started interrogating them to know that for whom they were carrying the consignment.
