Police brass to polish their image among youth

Community policing has become the new mantra of Delhi police, of late. Recently, Vasant Kunj south police station has initiated a special programme aimed at juveniles and youths, aged between 16 and 20, who are living in slums. Those interested would be trained in art and acting, with the help of the students from the University of Delhi [DU].

‘We are hoping that this would add to their skill sets, giving them direction in their lives,’ stated station house officer [SHO], Gagan Bhaskar to Millennium Post. Under this special programme, training would be imparted by the DU students. They would further use these skills to earn money, also, said Bhaskar.

‘There are five slums in our area. We first identified youths and juveniles who are jobless and approached them for this programme,’added Bhaskar.

According to Bhaskar, youths and kids who were earlier scared of policeman are now interacting freely with them and discussing about studies and other creative courses. ‘These kids would attend acting classes organised in their locality by a group of Delhi University students. They will learn all about of theatrical performance. There are given ideas about street plays and its importance. The kids in hundreds have shown interest in the programme.’

After the training, they would form a group, comprised of around 20 kids for street plays performance at various places in the city. They can also charge for that like any other theatre groups doing street plays for money, said Bhaskar.

The officer’s main aim is to win over the kids, who are living in poverty and lack of supervision, and show them path and bring hope. Children living in overcrowded homes in slums have little access to recreational facilities. They early in their life are exposed to abuse, abject poverty, exploitation and discrimination that lead them into crime world. The highest delinquency and crime rates are in slum areas, he said.

‘This would be an opportunity for these kids to open up and take right step,’ said Bhaskar. The officer reiterated that he would ensure that if this programme gets successful, he would form various theatre groups and would start many such programmes in his area.
