Police arrest IC-814 handler from J&K

The Jammu and Kasmir police apprehended Mehrajuddin Dand on Thursday, who is suspected to be involved in hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 in December 1999. He also features in a list of top 20 fugitives who went to Pakistan from India.

It is alleged that he provided logistic support to the hijackers of Indian Airlines flight as well as the perpetrators of the Lajpat Nagar bomb blast case in 1996. Sources say that Dand, also known as Javed Anwar, was caught from the Kishtwar region of Jammu and Kashmir.

'The Delhi Police was also trying to catch him due to his involvement in the Lajpat Nagar incident and had mounted surveillance on him,' the source said. He allegedly provided travel papers to IC-814 hijackers. Following his arrest, the National Investigating Agency officials are expected to go to Jammu and Kashmir to question Dand soon.

Sources say that Dand was living in Nepal with a Hindu name and had married there. He worked for several years for the IC-814 hijack accused Arshad Cheema, a Pakistani diplomat based in Kathmandu.
