Plane carrying Brazilian football team crashes in Colombia

At least 10 persons were injured as the plane, which carried 72 passengers en route to the Copa Sudamericana finals, crashed in La Union on Monday night, RT news reported.

The crash occurred due to lack of fuel at around 10.15 p.m. (local time), according to Mi Oriente.

The passengers were being evacuated from the scene, La Union fire department commander said.

The plane was flying to Jose Maria Cordova International Airport in Rionegro, the second largest airport in Colombia.

The team was travelling to compete in the Copa Sudamericana finals. 

Chapecoense was scheduled to compete against Colombia's Atletico Nacional on Wednesday.

After learning of the crash, the South American football confederation CONMEBOL said the football tournament has been suspended, El Universo reported.
