Originating from the Hindu temples of Orissa (now Odisha), Odissi is dance devoted to gods, their stories and mythologies. Traditionally performed by women, it is a Vaishnavite interpretation of Hinduism, where Vishnu is worshipped as Jagannath. While its mentions can be traced back to Natya Shastra, its presence also reverbates across intricate carvings drawn on temple walls in towns such as Bhubaneswar, Konarak and Puri. Colourful attire, vivid expressions and a repertoire of gestures make an Odissi peformance captivating.
