Maithon is a town located at the Jharkhand-West Bengal border – stretched between Dhanbad district in Jharkhand and Burdwan district in West Bengal. Maithon is known as ‘Kashmir of Koyalanchal’ because of its location in the coal belt of India. The Barakar river makes it a very famous picnic and weekend destination. Maithon got its name from Mai-ka-sthan or maayer sthan which literally means mother’s abode as it houses an ancient Kalyaneshwari Temple, built by the king of Barakar in the 16th century.
