Phoolan’s killer Sher Singh Rana gets lifer

Sher Singh Rana, who killed bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi in 2001, was awarded life imprisonment by a Delhi court, saying awarding death penalty to 35-year-old would be completely disproportionate as his crime cannot be equated with attack on Parliament.

In the 13-page order, additional sessions judge, Bharat Parashar said that it cannot be said that Phoolan was killed because she was an MP. ‘The act of convict Sher Singh Rana cannot be termed as an attack on a democratic institution of the country viz the Parliament,’ said the judge.

The judge while noting that Rana has already spent about 11 years in jail said, ‘I am thus of the considered opinion that awarding of death penalty (to Rana) would be completely disproportionate to the crime committed in the present case.’

The judge while imposing fine of Rs 1 lakh on Rana said, ‘For offence under Section 302/34 IPC, I award you life term and Rs 50,000 fine. For offence under Section 307, I award you life term with a fine of Rs 50,000.’

The prosecution had said that Rana should be given the extreme punishment for the heinous crime as a person like him is a threat to society. Rana’s counsel, however, had opposed the contentions of the prosecution saying the police has miserably failed to prove the motive behind the murder.
