Patient dies in LDVH, kin blame medical negligence

Tension gripped the Lady Dufferin Victoria Hospital (LDVH) following the death of a patient whose family members have alleged that negligence on part of some staff members at the hospital led to the death of the patient.

The victim’s family members staged demonstration in front of main entrance of the hospital on Saturday morning. They have also lodged a complaint at the local police station.

Ruksana Khatun, an expectant mother, a resident of Tangra was admitted to the hospital on Friday evening. She gave birth to a girl child on Saturday morning. The nursing staff of the hospital told Ruksana’s family members that the baby was alright but Ruksana needed blood transfusion.

The patient’s family members were handed over the blood requisition details. They took the details to the Calcutta Medical College Blood Bank where the blood bank attendants told the Ruksana’s family that blood group was not mentioned on the requisition issued by the hospital.

The relatives went back to the LDVH where the staff members allegedly told the relatives that would tell the medical college the blood group over the phone and instructed the family members to go to the medical college. Ruksana’s relatives again went to the medical college blood bank but the staff members there told them that LDVH did not communicate with them.

After shuttling between the two health care establishments when the family members finally reached the LDVH, some of its staff members told them that the patient had died. The members after hearing the news staged demonstration inside the hospital campus. They demanded stringent action against the accused. On the basis of a complaint lodged by the patient’s relatives, police have started an inquiry.
