Pandav Nagar cash van heist: Three arrested

Six days after a cash van was looted in Pandav Nagar, Delhi Police have cracked the case with the arrest of three accused and have managed to recover Rs 9,48,000 from the accused.

The three accused have been identified as Bittoo, Rohit and Sunny, who were arrested on Sunday from Cross River Mall located at Maharaja Surajmal Marg in Shahdara.

“When we managed to identify them, they were apprehended from the spot,” said Omvir Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East).

When the accused were interrogated, they were questioned at length after which they all confessed to their crimes. The trio had planned out the entire heist right after demonetisation, as the frequent transfer of money into ATMs had provided them with the opportunity.

Sunny, who was a cab driver was the one who came up with the idea of exploiting this opportunity. He had noticed that several ATMs in Karawal Nagar where filled by cash vans and they were accompanied by three to four men.

On the day of the incident, however, the trio’s plan went wayward as they had to cancel their plan three times before looting the van at Pandav Nagar.

At around 12:30 pm, the cash van from Brinks security reached Janakpuri and deposited the money at Corporation Bank ATM. However, because of a traffic jam in the area, they called it off.

The van then made it’s way to Nirman Vihar and deposited the money at Corporation bank. The presence of a large number of e-rickshaws, deterred the trio.

The van then reached it’s third destination at Shakarpur, however, luck kept evading the trio as they found a huge queue standing outside the SBI ATM.

Finally, they found the right location at Pandav Nagar. The ATM was closed for the past 15 days due to a technical problem and repair work was underway.

After keeping cash in their clothes, Sunny and Rohit threw the empty suitcase there and reached near the railway line of Vivek Vihar. After that, they divided the robbed cash equally.
