Panchayat samity sabhapati arrested after 19-year-old killed, one hurt in firing

Sabhapati of English Bazar Panchayat Samity Pabitra Roy was arrested following an incident in which a 19-year-old youth was killed and a class IX student was injured when Roy opened fire from his car after local people gheraoed the vehicle following a road accident. The incident took place at Baghbari Kulipara on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the car in which Roy was travelling hit a person, who was riding a bicycle. The accident took place when Roy was returning after attending an inauguration programme of a tournament at Kazigram.

Roy alleged that someone from the mob had fired at him and the firing from inside the car took place for “self defence”.

It is learnt that the driver tried to flee with the vehicle soon after the accident. But some local people chased the car and gheraoed it.  It was alleged that a section of local people had started pelted stones at the Roy’s car.

The situation turned worse when the mob refused to move back from in front of the car and “turned unruly”. Suddenly Roy opened fire from the car leaving one dead and one injured.

A 19-old-youth Asim Mondal received bullet injury on his head and a class IX student Rahul Paswan was also injured.

They were taken to Malda Medical College, where Mondal was declared brought dead and Paswan is still fighting for his life.  Local people blocked the road and staged a demonstration demanding Roy’s arrest. A huge contingent of police and RAF were deployed to maintain peace in the area.
Roy’s car was handed over to the police.

Driver had fled soon after the incident. But the demonstration continued in demand of Roy’s arrest.
Police finally arrested Roy on the basis of a complaint. Senior police officers had to intervene to withdraw the agitation even after the arrest of Roy.
