Panchayat poll dates as per law: TMC

In an attack on the State Election Commission over the panchayat elections, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Mukul Roy said the West Bengal government has acted as per constitution and constitutional bodies should function accordingly. ‘Trinamool Congress government was formed with two-thirds majority and it knows its constitutional responsibilities. It has announced dates remaining within its constitutional rights,’ Roy told reporters on the TMC government unilaterally announcing a two phase poll on 26 and 30 April.

Roy, a former Railway minister, also did not attach much importance to state Election Commissioner Mira Pandey meeting Governor M K Narayanan for a second time during the day saying, ‘Anybody can meet the Governor.’ The state Panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee is scheduled to meet the Governor on Friday to discuss the issue. To a question, he said there was no crisis and there was still time to hold the election. The election is due in May.The SEC had suggested a three-phase election under the supervision of central forces.
