Padma Lakshmi, Jagdish Bhagwati awarded

Deutsche Bank Co-CEO Anshuman Jain, television personality Padma Lakshmi and Columbia University Professor Jagdish Bhagwati were among the 19 people of Indian-origin who were awarded for their significant contribution to their communities and native India.

The second annual 'Light of India' awards is a platform created to recognise excellence and exemplary achievement of Indians living abroad. Awards were given in categories like business, corporate leadership, education, science, entertainment and journalism.

The awards have been constituted by the money transfer service of India's Times Group, 'Remit2India' to raise awareness about the achievements of Indians living abroad,' Avijit Nanda, President of TimesofMoney Group said in a statement here.

Renowned author Amitav Ghosh won the Jury award for excellence in literature and journalism. Lakshmi, host of cooking show 'Top Chef' won the jury award for excellence in arts and entertainment while actor and cancer survivor Lisa Ray won the People's choice award in the category.

Lifetime achievement awards were given to economist Bhagwati, Patni Computers Founder and CEO Narendra Patni and former CEO of Vodafone Group Arun Sarin.

The jury award for excellence in business leadership went to Syntel founder Bharat Desai, while the People's Choice award in the category went to internet entrepreneur and best-selling author Gurbaksh Chahal.

Dean of the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University Pradeep Khosla won the jury award for excellence in Science and Technology.
