Over 50 injured at PM’s rally spot in Dantewada

Just one day ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to naxal-hit Dantewada in Raipur, a pandal – from where he was to address a public rally – collapsed due to severe storm. Over 50 people were injured in the incident, most of them policemen.

State PWD Minister Rajesh Munnat was pressent on the spot when the incident took place. However, he is safe. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals in the city.

Modi is scheduled to make a one-day visit to Dantewada to inaugurate two mega projects, including an ultra mega steel plant with a capacity of three million tonne every year and the second phase of Rowghat-Jagdalpur railway line, said a state government official.

The pandal collapse has raised questions on the state government’s preparations to host the PM’s event, forcing Chief Minister Raman Singh call an emergency meeting of his cabinet and senior police officials.

Meanwhile, Maoists staged a protest against Modi’s visit. They blocked a main road in insurgency-hit Kanker district. They have also called for a bandh on May 9. Apart from the Maoists, the PM’s visit has also been rebuked by Congress MP BK Hariprasad who tweeted, “PM is visiting to please corporate sector, it’s very unfortunate for people of Chhattisgarh”.

Modi, apart from inaugurating these mega projects, is due to overesee several other projects and attend a foundation ceremony.
