Opposition using student leader’s death, says TMC

Two Trinamool Congress leaders, Subrata Mukherjee and Sudip Bandopadhyay, on Sunday alleged that there was too much of politics over the death of SFI student leader Sudipto Gupta.

‘Political parties are politicising the incident even before the investigation is over’, said Mukherjee. Sudipto who was a state committee member of the Student’s Federation of India (SFI), died at the state-run SSKM Hospital on Tuesday evening after he was reportedly hit by a lamp post while alighting from the police bus in which he and other protesters were being taken to Presidency jail.

Capitalising on the issue, the SFI observed a 12-hour strike at Garia and Tollygunge in the southern suburbs of Kolkata on Thursday, staged roadblocks and observed a student strike protesting the death of Sudipto. The incident sparked off a raging political furore with questions already being raised about the negligence of the Mamata Banerjee-led administration and the police. The student leader’s family also demanded a CBI probe and refused to accept any compensation from the state government.
