One-way system for Parama Island flyover to ease jams

The Kolkata Police on Tuesday introduced a one-way system on Parama Island flyover to avoid traffic congestion. The system will be in force until Lakshmi Puja, commissioner of police Surajit Kar Purakayastha said.

He said that from 7 am to <g data-gr-id="26">1pm</g>. Park Circus bound traffic would be allowed while from <g data-gr-id="24">1pm</g> to <g data-gr-id="25">10pm</g> bypass bound traffic would be allowed. However, on Saturday and Sunday, traffic from both ways would be allowed.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had visited the flyover to conduct a survey. Traffic jams during the morning and evening peak hours have become a regular feature since the flyover was opened on October  9 by Banerjee.

ExhibAs the arm that would connect the flyover with CongressSenior officials of Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) said a month or two would be required to construct the slope.

A traffic island will be constructed at Park Circus. Talks are on to connect the flyover with the AJC Bose Road flyover.

But arrangements will have to be made for lorries and heavy vehicles as they will not be allowed on Parama Island flyover.

Thousands of lorries on their way to the airport and beyond take AJC Bose Road flyover.

Now, if both the flyovers are joined, some arrangements will have to be made for the heavy vehicles so that they can reach Park Circus using AJC Bose Road flyover and then take the original road to reach Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.
