One receives bullet injury, 25 injured in two separate clashes

Two clashes broke out at Kamarhati and Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas on Monday over the possession of land. One person received a bullet injury and 25 others were injured in these two clashes as a whole, the police informed.

Police, however, arrested seven persons — three were arrested from Kamarhati and others were booked from Madhyamgram.

Bombs were charged in the roads and even in the courtyards of many old houses in Nayabasti from Monday night as the clash started between two rival anti-social groups over the possession of a piece of land there. Both the groups wanted to get hold of the land, but could not do it because of the resistance from local residents.

The local anti-social was shot and several others were injured by bullets and splinter of bombs in Monday night’s clash. The impact of the clash was so far-reaching that shops were closed on Tuesday. The local people did not even come out from their house in the morning.

Dispute over possession of land at Kargil Colony of Madhyamgram between two groups of people started a fight there on Monday night. “The criminals hired by local councillor came at night. They charged bombs and blanked fired here. The rival group then retaliated with counter firing. The area soon turned in to a warzone,” alleged a local woman.

The police reached the spot soon after the incident, but the anti-socials had escaped by then. “Many anti-socials fled from the area after the incident. We’ve initiated an investigation. Some local residents were interrogated. The local residents assured us of cooperation,” said an investigating officer.

“We’ll protect that three cottah of land in our locality. We know that some anti-social groups are trying to gobble the land brandishing their guns. But we’ll fight against it and police will help us in our struggle,” a local resident said.
