One more killed, two injured in auto-rickshaw accident

The victim has been identified as Raghunath Seal. The two injured persons were rushed to Barasat District Hospital. Their condition is stated to be serious.

The accident took place when the auto-rickshaw overturned and fell into a ditch after being hit by a Dakshineswar bound bus near Joypool area of Bira in North 24-Parganas.

Following the incident, the local people ransacked the bus and staged demonstration on Jessore road, triggering tension in the area.

The incident had led to huge traffic jam on Jessore road for a long time. The locals also demanded that police must intensify their vigil on Jessore road where the buses and auto-rickshaws compete with each other to pick up passengers.

A huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.Thedemonstration was lifted after getting assurances from the senior police officers of the district who rushed to the spot after the accident.

The incident occurred within 24 hours since another auto-rickshaw accident that claimed two lives in Salt Lake on Tuesday.

The local people told the police that accident occurred when the auto-rickshaw was trying to overtake the speeding bus on its way to Dakshineswar from Barasat.

The auto lost its control and was hit by the speeding bus. Police came to know that there were five persons in the auto including the driver of the vehicle.

Local people have alleged that the vehicles often flout traffic norms and there are not enough police personnel to crack down the offending vehicles.

Two persons died when an auto-rickshaw they were travelling in Salt Lake was hit by a speeding bus. Four others were critically injured in the incident. The auto was going to Ultadanga from Karunamoyee via City Centre when the accident occurred. A private bus of route number 215 A/1 hit the auto.

The intensity of the collision was so high that the auto fell at a distance of 25 foot from the place of the accident. A passenger and the driver who was sitting in the front seat died at the spot. Among the injured there were two women passengers.

In another accident a pedestrian was injured after being hit by a speeding auto-rickshaw near Tollygunge Phari. Police arrested the auto driver and seized the vehicle.
