One killed, two critical in accident on Digha-Mecheda road

One person was killed and two others left critically injured when the car they were travelling in collided head on with another vehicle on Digha-Mechada Road Thursday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Ajay Misra (38), an IT professional. His vehicle was going towards Ramnagar when the accident took place.

The police said the accident took place when the two cars, coming from opposite directions, lost control and collided head on. The impact was so heavy that the car in which Misra and his colleagues were travelling fell into a roadside water body. The occupant of the other vehicle was a Trinamool Congress leader, on his way to Tamluk to take part in the campaign of Dibyendu Adhikari.

Noticing the loud crash, local people rushed to the spot and rescued the occupants of the two vehicles. They were taken to a local hospital, where Ajay was declared brought dead. The other victims of the accident were admitted to hospital, and two are reported to be critical. The police later towed away the two mangled vehicles.

Police said that despite repeated requests, drivers have refused to stick to the speed limit. They have a tendency to accelerate whenever they see empty roads. Police could not say how the two vehicles coming from opposite directions came so close and hit each other.

In another road mishap, a person was seriously injured when two mini buses were racing each other on Thursday. The injured, identified as Rabindranath Chatterjee, was sitting beside the window with his right arm hanging outside. While racing, the two vehicles came close and dashed against each other, injuring Chatterjee severely.

He was taken to Howrah district hospital where his condition is stated to be critical. Police stopped one of the buses and arrested its driver, while the other one managed to flee. The erring mini buses were on Mandirtala-Esplanade and Esplanade Danesh Seikh lane routes.
