One killed, five injured as car overturns on Mandarmoni beach

A man was killed and five others including two children were injured when a car overturned on the beach due to a sudden rise in water level following high tide at Mandarmoni in East Midnapore on Friday afternoon.

Police said a family from Khardah in North 24-Parganas went for a tour to Mandermoni. They had been staying there for the past two days.

On Friday afternoon they were enjoying a drive on the beach. They were aware that there will be high tide at that time. But they had not realised that the water level will rise so fast.  Driver of the car failed to control the vehicle when the water level increased sharply. The vehicle with six passengers and the driver overturned.

The car got filled with water and the passengers had failed to come out. Employees of the hotels in that area initiated the rescue work after informing the police. Policemen rushed to the spot. But they faced trouble in rescuing the trapped people as the water level was rising.

Somehow they had managed to extricate the passengers and the driver and took them to a local hospital.  One of them was declared brought dead while five others were admitted with severe injuries. One was later shifted to a city based hospital.
