One dead as locals clash over ‘cow slaughter’ rumours

Tension gripped Greater Noida on Monday night after a clash broke out between two communities after a youth was bludgeoned by locals over rumours of slaughtering a cow. The clash resulted in the death of the youth’s middle-aged father and severe injuries to others.

Police, in order to control the situation, fired bullets at the hoodlums in which two sustained injuries and were admitted to a hospital where the condition of one is said to be critical. To avert any untoward situation huge police force was deployed in the area and penal action was initiated against the people involved in killing the man and massive arson.

As per reports, the tension erupted in <g data-gr-id="23">Jarcha</g> area after rumours spread that a family was carrying cow meat to their home in <g data-gr-id="24">Bisara</g> village, following which hundreds of people gathered and attacked the victims’ house. The police officials said that in the attack, one <g data-gr-id="25">Iqlak</g> died and his son, Danish, sustained severe injuries. The deceased was in his late fifties while his son is in his early twenties.

“Some locals spread rumours that the deceased carried cow meat to his home and engaged in cow slaughtering. Following the rumours, tension ignited and some locals attacked his house,” said an official. 

Police also informed that the situation is now under control. “Gautam Budh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police, Kiran S, is also camping in the area. As of now, the situation is under control. Victim’s daughter has lodged a complaint following which a case has been registered against 15 persons in various sections and six have been arrested. Adequate police force, including the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) battalions, has been deployed in the area to avoid any further clash,” said Sanjay Kumar Yadav, Superintendent of Police (Rural) of Greater Noida.
