One arrested for producing fake notes, neighbours attack police, BSF

The neighbours of a youth allegedly attacked the police and jawans of the paramilitary force when they jointly conducted a raid to recover counterfeit currency. The incident took place at Mohabbatpur near Kaliachak in Malda late Saturday night.

Police said they had conducted a raid in the house of one Wasef Ali acting on a tip off that a huge amount of counterfeit currency was hoarded in his house. Wasef was present in his house situated in the bordering district. Police searched the house and found counterfeit notes worth Rs 1.92 lakh. The notes were of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 denominations. Police came to know that he had plans to take the money to his counterparts in another part of the district.

They arrested Wasef. The situation turned worse when the police and jawans were taking him inside the police van as some people from the locality allegedly pelted stones at them. No one was injured in the incident. But panic broke out in the area due to the incident. It may be mentioned that both police and BSF jawans had seized counterfeit currencies from the bordering areas after receiving tip offs from their sources. The police had received tip off last night as well and conducted the raid.

The jawans of paramilitary force were accompanying the police as the election is ahead. The police are yet to ascertain the exact reason that infuriated the local people.
