Oil firms resume new subsidised LPG lines

After a few weeks of hiatus, state-owned oil companies have resumed issuing new subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections, beginning with the North-Eastern states. In September the issue of new cooking gas connections had been put on hold pending a massive nationwide exercise to eliminate users having multiple connections at the same address.
The three oil PSUs have now restarted releasing new LPG connections in Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, said Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOC), the nation's largest fuel retailer. Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura will follow suit. New connections will be released in other states once the exercise to eliminate duplicate connections is completed.
'Prospective customers who have registered for new LPG connections till October 15 with gas distributors of oil marketing companies (OMCs) — IOC, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) — in Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and who do no posses LPG connection, can now avail of a subsidised new LPG connection,' IOC said in a statement.
The same for customers in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura will be announced soon, it said. IOC said that although oil firms had stopped releasing new connections pending completion of the de-duplication process, they had continued to accept registration of new allotments. 'For the convenience of customers, oil marketing companies have also extended the deadline for completion of the know-your customer (KYC) forms till November 30,' it said. 'Only multiple connection holders should submit the KYC details before the new deadline.'
'The oil marketing companies had stopped the release of new connections, pending completion of the de-duplication process by them, although registration for new LPG connections were continued,’ IOC said. The move followed the government's decision to restrict the supply of subsidised LPG cylinders to six per household in a year.
The oil firms are eliminating duplicate connections –only one LPG connection in one address is neing allowed and the rest are being disconnected. 'For customers who had applied for a new LPG connection despite already possessing an LPG connection in the same household, thereby having given a false declaration, the oil companies will soon be initiating steps to block their existing connections and also initiate legal proceedings as per the law,' it said.
A list of prospective customers who are eligible for new LPG connection at subsidised rates in Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland and Andaman & Nicobar Islands is now available with the concerned LPG distributors.
The list has been compiled and readied after completion of the de-duplication process in the four states. The LPG distributors in these states will also be sending out separate intimation letters to those customers who are eligible for new LPG connection at subsidised rates, it said. On receipt of the intimation letter, prospective customers can approach their gas distributor, complete the formalities and avail of their new LPG connection.
