Officials raid Kaliaganj area to check cannabis farming

North Dinajpur district administration raided different areas of Kaliaganj to inspect whether illegal cannabis cultivation was going on there. The officers, however, could not find any such areas, but instructed the local residents keep a tab on the situation. The district administration was earlier informed that there were some areas, in which cannabis cultivation was going on. Some people were allegedly cultivating cannabis there. 

The district administration was also informed that some people gave money to those poor farmers to cultivate cannabis on their land. “We were informed that some people started to cultivate cannabis. But we could not find anything there. But we’ll continue frequent raids,” the officer said. It should be recalled that Cooch Behar district was one of such places where illegal farming of cannabis plant with thousands of acres being used up to cultivate it. Police and officers of narcotics department revealed that the plant is being grown on over 5,000 bighas of land with each bigha producing at least Rs 10-12 lakh for cultivators. “We have held time to time raid in those areas of North Dinajpur, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri where such cultivation used to take place,” a police officer suspected.
