Northern Railway takes up green initiatives

The Northern Railway took initiatives through small yet significant steps in the direction of reducing its diesel consumption through its avowed mission by using 5 per cent of bio-diesel on diesel locos, running of locos on dual-fuel mode, replacement of conventional toilets through bio-toilets on trains, water-audits, solar powered lighting level-crossings, LED fittings, regenerative braking system etc. 

Improved load factors through introduction of high capacity wagons (HCW) and special purpose wagons (SPW) for transportation of bulk load consuming same fuel for transportation of more payload and eco-friendly goods shed are some of the initiatives in the freight carrying segment. Delhi Division has also installed 750 units of environment friendly bio toilets in 260 coaches during the year.

CNG trains have been introduced on 4 sections of the Delhi Division on Shamli-Delhi, Rohtak-Rewari, Delhi-Kurukshetra and Delhi Sarai-Farrukhnagar sections. In addition to wide-scale efforts to introduce the use of bio diesel, the Railway has already commenced running of trains on the Rewari-Rohtak section on dual fuel mode. 

To meet the hotel load on trains through non-conventional energy sources, Northern Railway has initiated Solar powered PV on roof-top of trains; this is first initiative on Indian Railways. The Railway has extensive programmes for afforestation of Railway land.
