North MCD moots relief plan for divorced Muslim women

North MCD has come up with an unique idea to provide succour to divorcee Muslim women in the national capital. The civic corporation has decided to accept the certificate of divorce issued by a Qazi or Imam to grant pension to Muslim divorcee women.

Raising the issue of the plight of Muslim divorcee women in a meeting of the House, Turkman Gate councillor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal said, ‘Among Muslims, divorce is mostly oral, so divorcee women are not able to produce any certificate to prove their divorce and are unable to get benefits of the pension scheme of the corporation.’

He demanded that the Mayor make an appropriate amendment in the new pension policy to include poor divorcee Muslim women. During the discussion in the House on amendments in the new pension policy, councillor from Sultanpuri (East) Sushila Kumari suggested that a certificate from Qazi or Imam could be accepted as legal document for granting pension to poor divorcee Muslim women. The amendment was passed unanimously in the house to be incorporated in the new pension policy.

‘The decision is a great relief for poor divorcee Muslim women in Delhi. There are over 300 poor divorcee Muslim women in my ward alone who will now be benefited by the scheme,’ said Aaley Mohammad.

He hailed the decision and said that in his knowledge no Muslim divorcee women has ever been benefited by the scheme as submitting the legally admissible certificate of divorce has been an impossible task for them.
